Saturday 17th July 2021 Ullswater Cumbria
Aquasphere Chillswim Ullswater Swim 2021 was held on Saturday 17th July at Parkfoot Holiday Park on the outskirts of Pooley Bridge, this is the 2nd edition of this incredible swimming challenge! Swimmers completed the full length of lake swim in separate starts based on each swimmer’s average mile pace to give each one the best experience possible.
Congratulation to Stuart Hutcheson from the Borough of Harrow Swimming club Masters squad who has participated in this event and came second in his age group
This year the conditions could not have been better virtually no wind blue sky and sunshine.
The water was about 20 deg C which felt warm.
The lake is 7.5 miles long and gives a swim of between 11K and 12K. The swim was up the left side of the lake marked by large yellow buoys at half mile intervals. At the first six-mile buoys there were feeding stations. Drinks and jelly babies in small boats. The end was marked by a ten feet high yellow duck. Each swimmer had a timing chip attached to an ankle and there were timing mats in and out of the water.
9.00am was the start time for the first two waves. Four of us swam out in front and had a magnificent first three miles of flat water. Between mile buoys 3 and 4 the lake is wider, and the hills funnel the air so there is always a breeze. The ferry also passed us for the first time creating waves. By mile 4 the faster swimmers started overtaking and the rest of the swim is in a busy lake.
There were 674 starters of which 9 did not finish.
There was a cut off time of 7 hours 35 minutes which is the equivalent of 65 minutes per mile
